BIOLMIEL Prize 2022 – best polyfloral honeys are Italian while best monofloral honeys are Croatian, Greek, and Slovenian

BIOLMIEL 2022 International Jury has awarded as best polyfloral honey three Italian beekeepers: ‘Vito Pasquale Saluzzo’ from Castelvetrano (Trapani) that gained the first position with a honey obtained from the Sicilian black bees with a ‘Miele Siciliano di millefiori’; second place was awarded to ‘Consorzio dei Produttori Biologici (ConProBio) Lucano with a ‘Millefiori Bio’ produced in Basilicata; third place was awarded to ‘Soleterra di Luca Serri’ based in Modena with ‘Miele del Crinale dell’Appennino Tosco-Emiliano’, produced on the Apennine mountains. Differently from polyfloral honeys, first three awarded monofloral honeys are not from Italy. First place was awarded to an Acacia honey from the Croatian beekeeper OPG Keser.

Second place was awarded to the Greek Thyme honey from the beekeeper ‘Amorgiano Honey’. The third
place went again to an Acacia, from the Slovenian beekeeper ‘Rojs Andrej’.
Honeys were evaluated by an International Jury made up by 12 experts in organoleptic evaluation of honey, with Gian Luigi Marcazzan from CREA- AA (Bologna) as Panel Leader. The Jury met in Bari in ‘Buò – crudo cotto
mangiato’ premises.
Took part in the competition more that 220 honeys, of which 85 Italian and 140 coming from other European countries. Among all participating honey received the quality award only those that
had a water content less than 18% and a hydroxymethylfrfural (HMF) content less than 10 mg/kg, or less than 15 mg/kg if Heather honey, honeys harvested since more than 6 months, and tropical honeys.

Chemical analysis are carried out and certified by CREA – Agriculture and Environment in Bologna, a research centre recognized at international level.
BIOLMIEL has the aim to promote organic honey quality, strengthen the relationship between beekeeping and sustainable development, to support differences due to natural biodiversity, to exchange information
on the product, and also to increase the awareness of consumers on the quality of organic honey, produced by respecting both environment and bees.
BIOLMIEL was created and organized by ‘C.i.Bi.’, Consorzio Italiano per il Biologico, that since more than 30 years is providing Italian producers with service to qualify and certify their products. ‘C.i.Bi.’ president is Nino
Paparella, agricultural engineer from Bari.
BIOLMIEL 2022 was carried out with the precious collaboration of ‘CREA – Agricoltura e Ambiente’ of Bologna and ‘BIOLITALIA’, an organic producers association.
